MEDIA RELEASE NO. 652 / 2010 07 SEPTEMBER 2010
As part of the City’s various Arbor Month celebrations, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Brett Herron, will host an Arbor Day event in Gugulethu on Thursday 09 September.
City officials and councillors together with members of the community will plant an avenue of 100 Ficus natalensis (Natal fig) and Ficus rubiginosa (Little-leaf fig) trees, on the greenbelt in Silverstream Road, Tambo Village. Both tree species are known to survive extremely well on the Cape Flats and will create a unique landscape feature.
“The avenue of trees in Tambo Village is part of the City Parks’ environmental transformation, which seeks to turn the sandy Cape Flats into a leafy, green suburb. In years to come, residents of Tambo Village and neighbouring Manenberg will be able to sit under the shade of these trees in the hot summer months,” said Councillor Herron.
Date: Thursday 09 September
Time: 10:00 for 10:30
Venue: Tambo Square Community Centre, OR Tambo Avenue, Gugulethu
All media are welcome to attend.
