Copperhead single-handedly nabs three cable thieves
MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 66/ 2010
03 FEBRUARY 2010

A member of the City’s Metals and Theft Unit, commonly known as the Copperheads, arrested three cable thieves on the afternoon of 02 February 2010.

During his regular patrols of known hotspot areas, the officer spotted three males digging a trench in the Edith Stephens Wetlands Park. He acted swiftly and managed to arrest all three of the suspects before requesting back-up. Members of the South African Police Services (SAPS) Flying Squad arrived and assisted with the detention and transportation of the suspects.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 29, are believed to be from the Sweet Home Farm area and were detained at the Philippi Police Station on charges of theft of copper cable. Seven metres of four core underground 11KV cable was found in their possession, along with various cable theft implements.

“We want to congratulate our colleague for his vigilance, dedication and bravery,” said Neil Arendse, Head of the Copperheads.
