The Maynardville Park is known for hosting Shakespearean plays, birthday parties and charity events like the Toy Run and the Community Chest Carnival. City Parks have embarked on a project that will transform the old concrete pipes into usable play equipment for the benefit of the many children who use the park every day.
“This event showcases the Maynardville Park as a community facility where people can play, walk or sit and enjoy their natural surroundings, while also accommodating major events and local and international film shoots. It attracts people from all spheres of life, business and the community. World-class facilities such as this allow us to fight social ills like crime, drugs and vagrancy by providing a space for the community,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Tandeka Gqada.
Councillor Brunette said she was thrilled at the outcome of the project, which has seen a great deal of community involvement since it was first proposed by City Parks.
“We took the lessons learned from the very popular Urban Park that the City built in Green Point, and re-used old equipment to enhance the play area in Maynardville Park. The community has contributed generously to the project and children love climbing on and walking through the pipes. The City recently spent R6 million upgrading the park into a quality public open space with a paved boulevard surrounded by an avenue of trees, a landscaped kick-about, a parking area for large events, new fencing and gates, and an improved play park with a special mosaic wall. The pipes will bring joy to the many children from all over the city who love to come and play here. The fun for a good cause starts when everyone gets their hands dirty,” said Councillor Brunette.
Councillor Gqada says that this project is an example of a public-private partnership in action. Party packs have been generously donated by the newly opened Pick n Pay in Wynberg.
“This event is supported by the Wynberg Improvement District and we want to continue to encourage partnerships like this one so that we can all achieve so much more for our residents,” said Councillor Gqada.
