City to launch rental unit upgrade in Scottsdene
MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 164/ 2010
05 MARCH 2010

The City of Cape Town’s major rental unit upgrade project is extending to Scottsdene this month and Executive Mayor Dan Plato will officiate at its launch on Monday.

During Phase One of the project, properties will receive both basic refurbishments and upgrades in terms of the national Community Residential Unit (CRU) Policy. This first phase incorporates 7 775 CRU rental properties in 11 project areas across Cape Town. The project areas include rental units in Scottsville, Scottsdene, Manenberg, Heideveld, Hanover Park, Uitsig, Woodlands, Connaught in Elsies River, The Range in Bishop Lavis and Marble Flats in Ottery.

Project funding has been approved by Province for most of the developments. Further funding will be provided by National Government, according to the CRU Policy, and is estimated at over R1 billion for the first phase alone. The project will be rolled out to the various project areas as the funds are received by the City.

Date: Monday 08 March

Time: 11:00 – 12:00

Venue: Scottsdene Flats 1 – Adjacent to Scottsdene Youth Centre, Eoan Ave, Scottsdene

All media are welcome to attend.

“The aim of this project is to create an attractive environment that tenants can identify with proudly. A house is more than just shelter against the elements, and by creating an attractive environment we hope to contribute to a greater sense of community and well-being for all residents,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Housing, Councillor Shehaam Sims.

Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato, explained that: “The scope of this major housing rental refurbishment project includes not only a comprehensive review and upgrade of Council’s rental units, but also an enhancement of the living space surrounding the rental stock through various interventions such as provision of fencing, hard surfacing, and parking areas and the planting of trees. This is an important part of the City’s plan to provide quality living environments for our residents and we are very excited to now launch this important project in Scottsdene”.
The rental unit upgrade project was first launched in Kewtown in January 2010.
