MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 557 / 2010
27 JULY 2010

The City of Cape Town’s Executive Mayor, Alderman Dan Plato, will officially launch the ‘one meat-free day a week’ campaign in Cape Town on Thursday 29 July. This campaign was endorsed by the City’s Health Portfolio Committee on 06 April 2010.

Cape Town is one of only seven cities in the world to officially endorse this campaign for the sake of human health, animal welfare and climate change. Other cities who have endorsed the campaign include Ghent, Hasselt and Mechelen (all in Belgium); Sao Paulo (Brazil); and Bremen (Germany).

Date: Thursday 29 July

Time: 11:00

Venue: Crush Room, 5th Floor, Podium Block, Civic Centre, Cape Town

All media are welcome to attend.

This campaign aims to create awareness amongst primary and high school pupils of the importance of keeping animals out of factory farms, the impact of intensive animal farming on the environment and its role in climate change and why eating more fruit and vegetables and less meat is a healthier way of life.
