City of Cape Town Executive Mayor, Alderman Patricia de Lille, will officially rename Oswald Pirow Street to Christiaan Barnard Street on Saturday 3 December 2011.
The name change will honour the achievements of world-renowned cardiac surgeon, the late Dr. Christiaan Neethling Barnard.
The date is significant as it will be exactly 44 years ago that Dr Barnard performed the world’s first successful human-to-human heart transplant on 3 December 1967.
Dr. Barnard became a Freeman of the City of Cape Town on 3 May 1968.
