City’s Youth Environmental School to host Arbor Day programme
MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 634 / 2010
30 AUGUST 2010

The City of Cape Town's Youth Environmental School (YES) team, in collaboration with Metrorail and the Western Cape Education Department, will host an Arbor Day programme on 01 September 2010 at the Cape Town Station.

One hundred learners from Prince George Primary School in Retreat will travel in on the Edutrain to join in the celebrations and plant indigenous trees at the Cape Town Station. In so doing, they will show their commitment to a more sustainable transport system. They will also participate in lessons and activities on the train.

The aim of this programme is to create greater environmental awareness and appreciation for trees across our Cape Town schools, bringing home important greening messages such as:
• Save trees, recycle paper
• Plant trees, save our environment
• One house, one tree
• More trees more life
• Plant them today – save the future.

The national theme for Arbor Week this year is 'Plant for the planet – grow green'. Each year during Arbor Week, specific trees are highlighted. The trees for this year are Acacia xanthophloea (fever tree), Cladostemon kirkii (three-finger bush or butterfly tree), Rothmannia capensis (wild gardenia) and Rothmannia globosa (september bells or bell gardenia).

The City’s Youth Environmental School(YES) is an extensive, integrated ongoing youth capacity building, education and awareness programme providing a variety of projects, activities and resources to all schools.

All media are invited to attend. It will provide an excellent photo opportunity.
