City embarks on R132 million community facilities upgrade and development
MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 688 / 2012
20 AUGUST 2012

The City of Cape Town’s Community Services Directorate is embarking on a series of planned upgrades, with the intention of providing quality recreational and educational services across the City. In total, the upgrades will cost more than R132 million over the next municipal financial year (1 July 2012 – 30 June 2013).

Individual communities form the foundation and backbone of any society. In short, a society is only as good as the sum of its parts.

The City of Cape Town has dedicated itself to ensuring that the communities of Cape Town reflect a society that is in keeping with this administration’s commitment to building a Caring City.

“It’s important that residents of all communities have the kind of facilities that ensure an improved and more enjoyable quality of life. We are committed to providing this for the people of the Cape Town municipality and this upgrade plan is just one of the many ways we are doing that,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Tandeka Gqada.

The City will, in some cases, be building brand new facilities and, in others, upgrading already established facilities so that they meet world class standards.

This includes libraries, sports centres, halls, swimming pools and various parks throughout the municipality, along with the introduction of brand new spray parks, which children in particular should find a welcome addition in the heat of Cape Town’s summers.

“There is nothing more important than improving our communities and the lives of our residents and we will continue to put all our efforts into making sure that facilities in the communities in Cape Town are the best the country has to offer,” said Cllr Gqada.

Areas in which upgrades and new developments are planned include Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Imizamo Yethu, Du Noon, Nyanga and Athlone. Identification of these areas form part of the City’s long term redress plan to eradicate the historical legacy of Apartheid.
