City and partners to celebrate World Tourism Day with cycling tour in Masiphumelele

The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Grant Pascoe, together with partners Cape Town Tourism and local tour operator AWOL Tours, will celebrate World Tourism Day with a cycling tour of sustainable projects in Masiphumelele.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation has unveiled “Tourism and Sustainable Energy: Powering Sustainable Development” as the theme for this year’s World Tourism Day, which takes place on 27 September annually.

Date: Wednesday 26 September 2012

Time: 10:45

Venue: Bicycle Empowerment Network (BEN), container at the Sosabenza Youth Centre, Masiphumelele

All media are invited to attend.

RSVP is essential for this event. Journalists will not be given access to the restaurant unless they have confirmed attendance. It is therefore essential to indicate whether a journalist and a photographer will attend. Please RSVP to Lisle Brown via e-mail on lisle.brown@capetown.gov.za by no later than midday on Tuesday 25 September 2012 to confirm attendance.

If the City does not receive a response by Tuesday 25 September 2012 we will assume that you are not sending a representative and make the seat available to other media organisations.

11:00 Overview of tour and AWOL’s Responsible Tourism pilot project
11:10 Introduction to Masiphumelele
11:20 Walking/cycling tour of Masiphumelele

  • stop: Visit to Amakhaya Ngoku – a leading sustainable energy project. Amakhaya Ngoku (meaning “Homes Now” in Xhosa) was initiated after a fire destroyed approximately 400 informal homes located on a site that had been zoned for the building of a high school.
  • Second stop: Visit to a local resident who has a recycling project running in his back yard and is making a substantial difference in his environment in terms of education and sustainable living.
  • Third stop: A tree-planting ceremony at a crèche.
