City Traffic Officers arrest 32 suspects and record over 400 speeding offences
MEDIA RELEASE
6 FEBRUARY 2012

City of Cape Town Traffic Officers arrested 30 motorists on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, another two for theft out of a motor vehicle, and recorded 493 speeding offences during operations since the middle of last week.

On Sunday 5 February 2012, Traffic Officers arrested two motorists who were caught conducting an illegal drag race along Modderdam Road, between Amandel Road and Symphony Way, in Belhar. Both motorists were also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. One refused to take a breathalyser test even though he was visibly drunk, while the other driver’s test registered 0,66 mg of alcohol per 1 000ml of breath.

In addition, officers issued 35 traffic fines and recorded 100 speeding fines along Vanguard Drive between the N2 and Klipfontein Road; the highest speed was recorded at 122 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. Another drunk driver was also arrested in the area.

During the pre-Super 15 rugby match at Newlands Stadium on Saturday 4 February 2012, officers apprehended two suspects for theft out of a motor vehicle in two separate incidents. A senior officer was on patrol in Kelvin Road, Newlands, when he noticed someone illegally removing a laptop from a BMW. On approaching the vehicle, the suspect fled and the officer gave chase. Once apprehended, the suspect was taken to the Claremont Police Station. A few hours later, an officer on patrol in Palmyra Road was flagged down by a motorist whose vehicle had been broken into. The victim pointed out the suspect who was fleeing on foot. The officer gave chase and apprehended the suspect, who is being detained at the Claremont Police Station.

Meanwhile, during a roadblock along Vanguard Drive, between Milton Road and Frans Conradie Drive in Goodwood, officers arrested 26 motorists on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol. The highest breathalyser test registered 1,55 mg of alcohol per 1 000 ml of breath.

That same evening, officers recorded 342 speeding offences while conducting enforcement checks along Vanguard Drive, between Viking Way and Bofors Circle in Epping. The highest speed was clocked at 121 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

On Wednesday 2 February 2012, Traffic Officers patrolled Erica Drive in Ravensmead – a known illegal drag-racing hotspot – from 20:00 to midnight. They were able to intercept would-be dragsters and suspended 16 vehicles for mechanical defects. One motorist was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after his breathalyser test registered 0,63 mg per 1 000 ml of breath. In addition, officers issued 47 traffic fines for offences including failure to display registration plates and inconsiderate driving.

During speed enforcement checks along Frans Conradie Drive in Parow North, officers recorded 51 speeding offences. The highest speed was measured at 114 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.
