City of Cape Town Metro Police Officers arrested 37 suspects during a series of operations since Wednesday 25 January 2012.
On Sunday 29 January 2012, Metro Police Officers were conducting visible patrols along Charl Malan Drive in Bellville when they noticed three people acting suspiciously. Upon searching them, they found and confiscated 20 bundles of khat. During the same operation, officers arrested one drunk driver in Valhalla Drive and issued 188 traffic fines.
Later that day, officers arrested another two drunk drivers while conducting beach patrols in the Helderberg area. In addition officers issued 156 traffic fines, recorded 26 by-law offences and confiscated 30 bottles of alcohol.
On Saturday evening, 28 January 2012, officers arrested 16 motorists on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol during roadblocks in Khayelitsha and Somerset West. Meanwhile, eight motorists were arrested in Table View and one motorist in Durbanville for the same offence.
On Friday 27 January 2012, officers from the Metro Police Dog Unit were informed by members of the public that a white Toyota Avanza was transporting possible counterfeit money. While conducting patrols along De La Rey Road in Ravensmead, officers spotted the vehicle, pulled it over and searched it. They found a big plastic bag containing false R100 notes to the value of R54 200,00 which was confiscated along with five cell phones, seven bank cards, the vehicle and R3 000,00 in cash. Three suspects were arrested and detained at the Ravensmead Police Station until their court appearance.
That same evening, officers searched suspected drug dens in the Durbanville area, as part of a joint operation with the South African Police Services. During the operation, a Metro Police Officer saw through a window that a suspect was arranging bank bags containing a crystal-like substance on his bed. Officers searched the residence and the following items were found and confiscated:
- 50 bankies of TIK
- Five half-tablets of Mandrax
- Five quarter-tablets of Mandrax
- One crushed Mandrax tablet
- R520,00 in cash
The suspect was arrested for dealing and possession of illegal narcotics. In addition, one suspect was arrested for contravening the City’s Public Nuisance By-Law.
Earlier in the week on Wednesday 25 January 2012, officers arrested one suspect in Hanover Park for possession of illegal narcotics after he was found with dagga. In Gugulethu, officers searched a suspected drug den and arrested one suspect for possession of illegal narcotics after he was found with 30 packets and 10 grams of TIK.
Meanwhile, in Nyanga, officers arrested one suspect for during a drug raid on a house in Makarie Street, Heinz Park after he was found with 17 dagga ‘stoppe’. Another suspect was arrested for possession of illegal narcotics in New Rest after he was found with 15 dagga ‘stoppe’ and one dagga parcel.
“We will continue to clamp down on drunk drivers on our roads in order to protect law-abiding road users. In addition, we will persist in our campaign against drug-dealers, with a focus on suspected drug dens and drug pedlars,” said Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro.
