CITY TO ACT ON BEACH LAW CONTRAVENTIONS
More than 200 logs lost from the bulk carrier Lola, off Cape Town last Saturday night, are washing up on local beaches and, because they are valuable, people are trying to retrieve them using four wheel drive vehicles.

Gregg Oelofse, Head: Environmental Policy and Strategy in the City's Environmental Resource Management Department, points out, however, that it is illegal to take a vehicle into the coastal zone.

A permit is required from Marine and Coastal Management

"City Law Enforcement will patrol the areas and take action against offenders," he said.

According to the NSRI, the logs have been spotted from Yzerfontein and Dassen Island to the north and Kommetjie and Hout Bay to the south.

Anyone spotting a log can contact the appointed salvor, Svitzer Salvage, on 021 408 6710.
