World AIDS Day (1 December)
Various programmes are hosted at our libraries across the city of Cape Town on 1 December.
Holiday programmes
Library and Information Services hosts various holiday programmes during the June and December school holidays.
South African Library Week: 15 - 22 March 2014
South African Library Week is celebrated in and by libraries across the country each year.
Library Week falls within the week of 20 March, as this day in 1818 saw the establishment of the South Africa Public Library, currently known as the National Library of South Africa, in central Cape Town.
Another reason for choosing this particular week is because Human Rights Day falls on 21 March – and freedom of access to information is enshrined in our Bill of Rights.
World Book Day: 23 April 2014
World Book Day, established by UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) in 1995, aims to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. Various programmes are hosted at City libraries on this day.
Cape Town Book Fair: 13 - 15 June 2014
The annual Cape Town Book Fair is the biggest public event - entirely devoted to the showcasing of international and African books and book services - hosted at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). Library and Information Services has hosted a stand at this event since its inception.
