How to join the library

How do I obtain a library card?
You would need to complete a membership form to apply for membership.

You need to provide a valid identity document together with a proof of your home address (such as a utility bill).

If you are applying for a card for a child who is younger than 17, you will need to sign their application form, and include their identity document as well as your own.

Can I download a membership form?

Yes you can. Membership forms must however be handed in at your nearest library in order to be processed. All membership forms must be accompanied by the additional documentation required (see above).

Do I have to pay for a library card?
Not if you live in Cape Town, as your rates support the library. If you lose your card, though, you will have to pay R16.

If you live outside the metropolitan boundaries, you may buy a non-resident card for R140 on tariff sheet. This is valid for a year. If you are a visitor to Cape Town, you may obtain a card for R70, and borrow three books.
