2010 FIFA World Cup™
Projects  

Green Goal 2010 comprised 41 projects in nine target areas. Of these 41 projects, 37 were fully implemented and one is still under-way.

 

Target area: Energy efficiency and climate change

Objective: Minimise the carbon footprint of the 2010 event

Projects:

  • Determining the carbon footprint of the 2010 event 
  • Identifying and implementing carbon mitigation projects in Cape Town/Western Cape 
  • Installation energy-efficient technologies in stadia and training venues, and at the FIFA Fan Fest and PVAs

Target area: Water conservation

Objective: Minimise the use of potable water, and promote conservation of water resources

Projects:

  • Identifying alternative sources of water for irrigation of Green Point Common and implementing most feasible option
  • Installation of water-saving devices in stadia (Cape Town, Athlone and Philippi) and training venues

Target area: Integrated waste management

Objective: Reduce, reuse, and recycle waste

Projects:

  • Operational waste minimisation in stadia, the FIFA Fan Fest, PVA’s, and training venues in the run-up to and during the event
  • Green Goal Branding of recycling bins and waste minimization signage
  • Recycling drop-off centres in the CBD and on the Atlantic Seaboard

Target area: Transport, mobility and access

Objective: Promote energy efficient and universally accessible mobility, and minimise air pollution

Projects:

  • Development of bicycle and pedestrian facilities
  • Development of public transport infrastructure
  • CBD bicycle services

Target area: Landscaping and biodiversity

Objective: Promote indigenous landscaping, and enhance biodiversity

Projects:

  • Indigenous gardening training programme for Green Point Park staff
  • Biodiversity showcase garden at Green Point Park
  • Student landscape design competition for Mouille Point beachfront and promenade
  • City beautification and tree-planting campaign

Objective: Promote environmental awareness, sustainable lifestyles and environmentally efficient building practices

        • Smart Living Centre in Green Point Park
      • Undertaking and monitoring green review for Cape Town and Athlone stadia

      • 2010 Green Goal volunteer training module
      • Green Goal soccer club competition
      • Soccer and environment educational poster and guide
      • Green Goal short films
      • Anti-littering and waste recycling campaign

Objective: Promote responsible tourism for 2010 and beyond
