Visiting soccer teams will be able to train at two official, FIFA-compliant venues in Cape Town: Athlone Stadium and Philippi Stadium.
Athlone StadiumAthlone Stadium’s R406 million upgrade includes the new West, North and South grandstands, increasing seating capacity to 25 000. The upgrade includes additional parking areas, VIP suites, better player facilities (including four change rooms) and 1 000 lux floodlights. One of the most significant upgrades is the new pitch, which was laid early in 2009; the quality is similar to that of the Cape Town Stadium.
The Newlands Southern Sun Hotel, which is the Venue Specific Training Hotel, is 13km away from the Athlone Stadium and 20km from Cape Town International Airport.

Philippi StadiumThe Philippi Stadium’s R56 million upgrade includes the new FIFA-approved pitch which, like Athlone Stadium, is similar to that of the new Cape Town Stadium, all in a bid to ensure consistency for visiting teams.
New 500 lux floodlights, media centre, ablutions and four change rooms, spectator stands (seating up to 4 000 fans) cloakrooms, and closed circuit cameras ensure FIFA compliance.
The Philippi Stadium will provide a significant legacy for its residents as the venue will now be suitable for National Premier League games.
The Vineyard Hotel as the Venue Specific Training Hotel is 35km away from the Philippi Stadium and 20km from Cape Town International Airport.
