It was brought to Cape Town as part of the Coca-Cola FIFA World Cup™ Trophy Tour, which has taken it through 86 countries. The trophy arrived in South Africa last Wednesday, and was taken to former president Nelson Mandela at his Johannesburg home for viewing before coming to Cape Town.
According to Coca-Cola, more than 10 000 people crammed into the OR Tambo Sports Centre in Khayelitsha on Friday to see the trophy.
It was also displayed at Alexander Sinton High School in Athlone on Saturday. The event included a DJ and live radio broadcast, appearance by World Cup™ mascot Zakumi and the Coca-Cola Trophy Dancers.
The trophy then made its way to the Outlook Rooftop at the V&A Waterfront on Sunday. The rain and bad weather didn't stop thousands of people – many dressed up in football-themed outfits – from stopping by to see the trophy for themselves.
The trophy will visit 38 towns in all nine provinces of the country before the tournament starts on 11 June 2010.
