FIFA is seeking 30 Capetonians to volunteer as guides and assist foreign soccer fans during the FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009.

This tournament is seen as a dress rehearsal for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, when many more volunteers will be needed.

The Confederations Cup will take place in Johannesburg, Tshwane/Pretoria, Rustenberg, Mangaung/Bloemfontein and Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth from 14 to 28 June 2009.

Although Cape Town is not a host city of the Confederations Cup, many visitors are expected to travel through Cape Town International Airport, and the 30 volunteers that are selected for training will be responsible for assisting these in-transit visitors.

As the first point of contact with the hundreds of thousands of visitors that are expected to visit South Africa, the volunteers will be essential in determining how the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup are perceived, said Organising Committee CEO Dr Danny Jordaan.

“Thousands of hours have been spent on tournament preparations and to deliver world-class stadia and infrastructure. It is, however, the warm hospitality and friendly reception we give the hundreds of thousands of supporters who will descend on our country that will make us deliver on our promise of making 2010 the best FIFA World Cup ever,” he said.
