Spectators advised to prepare for wet weather for today’s match

Rain and cold is predicted for today’s second World Cup match at Cape Town Stadium. Spectators at the stadium, FIFA Fan Fest™, fan walk and public viewing areas/fan jols are advised to prepare and plan for the weather when Italy plays Paraguay at 20:30 tonight.

Residents and visitors should allow even more time to travel, wear suitable clothing, travel light and use public transport wherever possible.

The first match at the Cape Town stadium on Friday has been hailed as a great success. Good weather and thousands of Capetonians and visitors revelling in the streets and fan areas made for a memorable event. Some 20 000 people chose to walk the decorated 2,4 km Fan Walk to the stadium.

Today’s cold and rain means that fewer people are likely to use the fan walk to walk to the stadium. More people are expected to make use of the MyCiTi shuttle bus service from the Civic Centre bus station to the stadium. All spectators should therefore arrive early to avoid congestion at the bus station.

The MyCiTi stadium shuttle bus service moved 11 000 spectators to the stadium on Friday. The shuttle service has the capacity to transport 15 000 people per hour to and from the stadium.

People with match tickets should get to the stadium as early as possible. Gates open 3.5 hours before kick-off. Arriving early will prevent congestion at the stadium. Fans are advised to travel light. Security checks take longer when staff have to search large handbags and rucksacks.

Rain jackets should be used as no umbrellas are allowed into the stadium. Other banned items include: aerosol cans, bottles, cans, cups, vacuum flasks, beverage containers other than official FIFA containers or sponsor’s products, glass, wapons, flagpoles, banner poles, laser pointing devices, fireworks or sticks. All these items will be confiscated.

Entrance to the stadium will be much smoother if people travel light and leave banned items at home.

Umbrellas are permitted at the Fan Jols, FIFA Fan Fest and the Fan Walk.
