The City of Cape Town hosted a high-level FIFA and Local Organising Committee delegation on Monday 5 May 2008, which inspected progress on the new Green Point Stadium, and also visited the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

The delegation was led by FIFA General Secretary Jérôme Valcke and LOC CEO Danny Jordaan.

The primary purpose of the visit was to look at the suitability of the Convention Centre to hold the final draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The delegation had a full inspection of the Convention Centre, and will report back to a FIFA LOC board meeting in Johannesburg.

Cape Town is the preferred host city for the final draw, which will take place on 4 December 2009, and is expected to be a global media event.

“Should it be awarded to Cape Town, one could expect FIFA and LOC officials, and other members of the world football industry, spending at least a week in Cape Town, with four days of actual draw events,” said the City’s 2010 spokesperson, Pieter Cronje.

The delegation also donned hard hats and had a walk around the stadium, which is one third complete, with the first tier in place.

“The LOC technical advisory team expressed their satisfaction with both the facilities and progress on the site,” said Cronje.

They then met with Executive Mayor Helen Zille and Deputy Executive Mayor Grant Haskin.
