The construction of the new 2010 FIFA World Cup™ stadium means that Cape Town’s well-known Green Point Informal Trading Market will be temporarily relocated to nearby sites – but traders must register in order to be given first preference at the new sites.

The construction of the new Green Point Stadium has unavoidably inconvenienced some residents and businesses in the area.

One of Cape Town’s popular tourist attractions, the Green Point Informal Trading Market, which is renowned for its African curios, will have to move due to the construction of the new Green Point Traffic Circle and pedestrian underpass, which is due to start soon.

The market site, situated around the old stadium, has now been closed, and traders will be temporarily relocated to alternative sites within proximity of the old market.

This is to ensure that informal traders are able to continue trading while the stadium is being built, and to meet the City of Cape Town’s strategic objective of creating more trading opportunities for its residents.

Construction of the new stadium and surrounding precinct is on track for completion in December 2009.

Green Point traders will be given first preference for trading on the new temporary sites, but are required to complete an application form by Monday, 6 October, 2008 in order to ensure this.

Registered traders will then be contacted on Friday, 10 October, with details of the new trading locations, and the operating procedures for the new location. Trading at the new sites will begin on Saturday, 18 October, 2008.
