An application for additional building authorisation will be made for the new multi-purpose Green Point stadium because the construction work is ahead of schedule. The authorisation will ensure that the project continues to be legally compliant.
The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee will recommend to a full Council session this week that the City’s 2010 Project team be given permission to apply for further provisional authorisation for the stadium construction.
Current work is still within provisional authorisation given earlier this year, but by the end of May, further authorisation will be needed. Final approval of the building plans can only be considered by Council on 27 June after the public comment period for the revised plans closes on 7 June. The original plans, also made available for public comment, were revised to make the stadium lower and smaller to match the available budget.
A report to the Mayoral Committee states that additional authorisation will be sought for work up to and including the level 2 podium slab. The podium is the base around the stadium bowl. The podium houses, amongst others, parking bays, stadium services and equipment. Authorisation will be sought for under-floor services, concrete surface beds, columns, suspended slabs and beams, lift and stair shafts, retaining walls and the first lift of raking columns.
The report says that to date expenditure on the stadium is R307 million (excl VAT). This includes professional fees, but excludes completed work not yet certified. By 31 May projected costs will total R479 million (excl VAT) and by 30 June R550 million (excl VAT). The toal cost of the the multi-purpose 68 000 seater stadium is R2,857 billion.
