
The FIFA Fan Fest™ on the Grand Parade has almost reached reached full capacity, with fans congregating to watch the opening ceremony and first game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
The City of Cape Town therefore urges the public to make use of the other viewing facilities throughout the city.
The City has four fan jols which are open on all match days from 11:00 – 23:00.
- The Bellville Velodrome fan jol is situated in Carl Cronje Drive, Bellville and has a capacity of 6 000.
- The Swartklip fan jol is situated at the Swartklip Sports Complex on the corner of Tafelberg and Spine Roads in Mitchells Plain. It has an internal capacity of 850, and an external capacity of 5 000. Both areas have giant screens on which to catch all the action.
- The OR Tambo fan jol is situated at the OR Tambo Sports Centre, corner of Mew Way and Lansdowne Road, Khayelitsha and has a combined indoor and outdoor capacity of 4 000.
- The Vygieskraal fan jol is situated in Johnston Road, Athlone and has a capacity of 2500 on the grandstand and 5000 – 7500 on the field.
A headcount at 12:00 showed just over 500 people had gathered at Bellville and 850 at Swartklip.
Entrance to all fan jols is free and a host of entertainment is offered and the public are encouraged to go there.
In the CBD, spectators will be directed to other areas in the city and we would like to advise people to please go to the V & A Waterfront, Long Street and Greenmarket Square.
The City’s fan walk will commence with on-street entertainment at 15:30 and the public are encouraged to join in and experience the ‘vibe’.
The Park & Ride facility at the University of Cape Town is almost full and the public are advised to use the rail-based park & ride facilities in the southern suburbs.
The City’s Joint Operations Centre is receiving regular information about viewing areas in the city and motorists are urged to watch the variable signage boards on the N1, N2 and M5 for traffic information
