Cape Town Stadium to host third test event: prayer gathering

Cape Town Stadium is set to host its third test event on Monday 22 March, during which all 55 000 permanent seats will be available for the first time.

‘Cape Town For Jesus’, a religious gathering addressed by well-known South African evangelist Angus Buchan, will be the first major non-sporting event hosted at the stadium, and will give the stadium operators another chance to test the stadium's readiness ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.

The first test events were a soccer match with a 20 000 crowd, and a rugby festival attended by 40 000 people.
The stadium will host eight World Cup™ matches, including a semi-final. It will have 13 000 temporary seats for the World Cup™, but these will be removed after the tournament.

A further soccer match, the Cape Town International Challenge on 10 April, will see the stadium filled to capacity, with all 68 000 permanent and temporary seats in use.

‘Cape Town For Jesus’ will be attended by the Premier of the Western Cape, Helen Zille, and the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Dan Plato.

The City of Cape Town is however, not involved in the event. It is an initiative of the Body of Christ in Cape Town, and will focus on important issues surrounding the city and the World Cup™. It will involve prayers and blessings for the stadium, city, province, country and its leaders, as well as all those involved in the World Cup™, such as the emergency services and youth.

Date: 22 March 2010
Time: 13:00, gates open at 11:00
Venue: Cape Town Stadium, Green Point
Tickets: R40, available through Computicket.

Transport information

Park-and-ride

The third test event will make it possible to test additional aspects of the planned Transport System for the World Cup™. Spectators are encouraged to use the ten Park-and-Ride facilities at the rail stations in Strand, Fish Hoek, Claremont, Kuils River, Ottery, Grand West (Goodwood), Retreat, Bellville, Mitchells Plain and Brackenfell, where extra security will be available from 10:00 to 21:00. Parking will be free, except at Grand West Casino, where all-day parking will cost R10. In addition, Metrorail will be offering extended services for the event.

There are earlier trains available, but the last trains to Strand will leave Cape Town Station at 18:10 and to Kuils River at 18:20. Trains to Goodwood, Bellville, Brackenfell and Ottery Stations will leave Cape Town Station at 19:30, and trains to Fish Hoek, Retreat and Claremont at 19:42. The last train to Mitchells Plain will leave Cape Town at 20:10. This gives spectators ample time to reach the station after the end of the event.

Signage from the Cape Town Station will guide commuters either to the shuttle service in Hertzog Boulevard or direct them along the pedestrian route to the stadium.

Shuttle service

The shuttle service will once again be available to transport spectators from Hertzog Boulevard in the city centre to the stadium and back with buses. This service will run from 10:00 to 19:00 and only those who can present their tickets for the event will be allowed onto the buses free of charge.

Parking

As with the first and second test events, only spectators who have purchased pre-paid parking tickets will be allowed to park at the stadium. In addition, people are discouraged from parking in the surrounding neighbourhoods. Law Enforcement and Traffic Services will be on patrol to deal with illegal parking and other traffic offences. Signage at the stadium will guide pre-paid parking ticket holders to the dedicated parking areas around the stadium.

Spectators can use the free parking available on the Foreshore under the N1 Bridge, as well as parking bays in the CBD. Security guards have been hired and will patrol these parking areas. The shuttle hub is a convenient walking distance from the Foreshore and Cape Town Station, for those who decide to travel by train.

As an alternative to using the shuttle buses, spectators are encouraged to walk along Riebeek Street and Somerset Road directly to the Cape Town Stadium. Walking time is estimated at about 20 minutes. After the event, part of Somerset Road will be closed to vehicles to allow a safe and enjoyable walk back to the city centre and Cape Town Rail Station.
