The City is implementing Green Goal 2010, the official 2010 FIFA World Cup™ greening programme that aims to make the event as environmentally friendly as possible. The programme incorporates sustainable development principles into every aspect of the event.
Objectives:
- Building a 2010 Green Goal Programme in conjunction with Provincial Government Western Cape, including developing the necessary capacity resources.
- Ensuring sustainable procurement and construction in relation to the planning and development of stadia, urban park and other precinct facilities (Eco-efficiency).
- Planning and developing appropriate landscaping and biodiversity measures.
- Facilitating an integrated waste management programme for 2010 (in conjunction with Solid Waste Department).
- Coordinating 2010 Event Greening Communications programme, including a monitoring and evaluation programme for 2010 in synergy with national-level programmes.
- Developing and implementing Green Ratings Programme for hospitality industry.
- Developing appropriate environmental interventions in support of sustainable transport.
- Facilitating appropriate sustainable tourism interventions.
