The Blue Flag is an exclusive ‘eco-label’ awarded to over 3 600 beaches and marinas in over 46 countries, across Europe and the Caribbean, in South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil and Canada. The Blue Flag Programme is owned and run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), an independent non-profit organisation.
In the city of Cape Town, eight beaches qualified for full Blue Flag status for the 2011/2012 season. These beaches are Bikini, Camps Bay, Clifton 4th, Llandudno, Muizenberg, Mnandi, Silwerstroomstrand and Strandfontein.
Blue Flag beach environmental education (EE) programme
One of the requirements for Blue Flag beaches to retain their annual Blue Flag status is the need to offer a minimum of five environmental education activities. The activities should target different groups, such as tourists, beach staff, children and visitors.
For each of the three Blue Flag beaches, the City of Cape Town provides environmental education and information to the public, decision makers and tour operators.
