The Environmental and Heritage Resources Management Branch is responsible for on-the-ground environmental and heritage monitoring, procedures and projects. The branch enforces compliance with environmental, heritage and outdoor advertising legislation and policies (e.g. outdoor advertising control). Tariffs are implemented and fees are collected for development applications, heritage resources and environmental monitoring. The branch also works on local environmental, heritage and outdoor advertising projects.

Key functions of the branch include:

• Environmental evaluation of developments, green building guidelines, environmental management plans (EMPs) and environmental impact assessments (EIAs)
• Heritage resources management, Cultural Heritage Strategy implementation, heritage impact assessments (HIAs) and urban conservation area approvals
• Advice for development in areas of heritage significance
• Local heritage improvement projects
• Local environmental upgrading projects
• Outdoor advertising and signage control, general Areas of Control [PDF 5.2MB] for different signage types in terms of the Outdoor Advertising and Signage By-Law of 2001 [PDF 953KB].
  
• Community-benefit outdoor advertising projects
• On-site environmental monitoring and enforcement of EIA and HIA conditions, environmental conditions of planning approvals, and outdoor advertising approval conditions
