Environmental Internship Programme 2010/2011
12-Month Contract (1 March 2010 – 28 February 2011)

The City of Cape Town’s Environmental Resource Management (ERM) Department is offering twenty three 12-month internships in environmental and heritage management, nature conservation, landscape architecture and quality public spaces programme and environmental communications.
The internship provides an exciting opportunity for new graduates to develop capacity and skills in key environmental areas in the City of Cape Town and to gain practical hands-on experience. The interns will be mentored by managers within the ERM Department and skills development will be enhanced by attending capacity building and training workshops and enrichment programmes.
Applicants should:
- be new graduates in the field of environmental science, environmental management, nature conservation, communications/marketing, landscape architecture or civil engineering
- have good planning, administration, written and oral communication, IT and analytical skills
- be able to work in a team and under pressure
A valid Code B (08) driving licence is absolutely essential.
A fixed stipend will be negotiated with the successful applicants which will include other employment fringe benefits. Applicants must be able to commence work on 1 March 2010. Preference will be given to local graduates who have not enrolled for further studies coinciding with the internship period.

The intern will be required to do the following:
- Co-ordination and liaison between the City of Cape Town and the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) partnership.
- Assist with the logistical functions of 4 annual bilateral meetings.
- Prepare documentation and reports applicable to the partnership.
- Assist with building environmental sustainability into the planning, design and operation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ soccer tournament in the city of Cape Town.
- Co-ordination of aspects of the Local Action for Biodiversity (LAB) project nationally and internationally.

The intern will be required to do the following:
- Provide GIS assistance to branch members and generate maps as required.
- Update key biodiversity information and spatial layers.
- Assist with Biodiversity Network updates and reports.
- Assist branch members in ground-truthing the Biodiversity Network, both terrestrial and wetlands components.
Qualification and skills required
A degree in Biological Science/Environmental Science or a diploma in Nature Conservation, with a major in GIS. Fresh water ecology knowledge.
ESSENTIAL – GIS and applications, data capturing, digitising spatial manipulations and mapping products, advanced computer literacy, driving licence.
Post three – Environmental Management Systems Assistant

The intern will be required to do the following:
- Assist the co-ordination and integration of City comments on Integrated Environmental Management (IEM) documentation, including strategic environmental assessments, environmental management frameworks, environmental impact assessments, environmental management plans and programmes, and environmental management systems.
- Input into the compilation and review of national, provincial and local draft policy and legislation relating to environmental management.
- Assist with environmental compliance monitoring and reporting, including site visits, inspections, environmental audits and report production.
- Assist with office administration, communication and liaison with relevant City staff and other stakeholders.
Qualification and skills required
A recognised tertiary qualification in Environmental Management or related field of study.
ESSENTIAL – Good communication, written and oral skills and advanced computer literacy, working knowledge of environmental law including NEMA and ECA, driving licence essential.
Post four – Coastal Management Officer

The intern will be required to do the following:
- Fieldwork and administration for the Coastal Management Unit (Environmental Strategy and Partnerships Branch).
- Assist with coastal management, including: coastal compliance monitoring, sustainable coastal management plans, disaster response.
- Assist with coastal biodiversity management, including: coastal vegetation management, research and monitoring, alien clearing, fire fighting, infrastructure maintenance, coastal plant rescue and propagation operations, environmental education, team supervision, community liaison and gate keeping.
Qualification and skills required
A National Diploma in Nature Conservation or a degree in Environmental Science/Management or related field of study.
ESSENTIAL – Driving licence (Code B) and own vehicle, excellent report writing and communication skills, and computer literacy.
Optional/Advantageous: GIS skills.

The intern will be required to do the following:
- Support the implementation of sustainable livelihoods initiatives based on natural resources, amongst communities in the city of Cape Town.
- Support partnerships between role playing organisations and the City of Cape Town.
- Support the implementation of greening programmes.
- Investigate the sustainability of projects and explore project options e.g. find markets for sales of project products.
- Write reports, funding proposals, speeches and minutes of meetings.
- Maintain a greening database, an image library and a sustainable livelihoods database.
- Undertake regular site visits to various project sites.
- Attend meetings as required.
- Write a full report on the relevant projects by the end of the internship.
Qualification and skills required
A Social or Natural Science degree or diploma.
ESSENTIAL – Driving licence and own vehicle, good written and oral skills and advanced computer literacy.

Job Profile for Internship
The intern will be required to do the following:
- Fieldwork and administration for the Biodiversity Management Branch.
- Law enforcement on nature reserves, alien clearing, fire fighting, veld and animal rehabilitation, building and infrastructure maintenance, research and biodiversity monitoring, plant rescue and propagation and rehabilitation, environmental education, team supervision, community liaison and gate keeping.
- Able to assist in game capture across the City by assisting the game capture manager based at Nature Reserves.
- Report writing and attending meetings.
Qualification and skills required
A National Diploma in Nature Conservation.
ESSENTIAL – Driving licence, good written and oral skills and computer literacy.
Must be physically fit and able to work long hours in sometimes difficult and dangerous conditions.
Post seven – Assistant Environmental Officer

The intern will be required to do the following:
- Project management and facilitation of programmes.
- Environmental education at the reserve and/ or at the education centre and community liaison.
- Lesson planning and assisting logistically with preparation and presentation of lessons.
- Development and updating of educational and resource material.
- Assist with staffing and promotion of the Nature Reserve in the neighbouring communities.
- Negotiate with landowners.
- Nature Reserve fieldwork duties.
- Participate and assist with the week/weekend overnight camps.

A recognised tertiary qualification in Environmental Education and/or Nature Conservation.

The intern will be required to:
- Apply basic concepts and knowledge of environmental management to all land use planning applications, building plans and projects for the Environmental and Heritage Management Branch.
- Assess land use planning applications and building plans with regard to environmental screening criteria and legislation.
- Prepare assessment reports on behalf of the Regional Manager to Province, Directorates and City service branches.
- Undertake site visits.
- Be assertive.
- Deal with applicants face-to-face.
- Be a “self-starter” and exhibit excellent time-management skills.
- Liaise with Heritage Resource Management colleagues around applications.
Qualification and skills required
A degree or diploma in Environmental Management, Physical Geography, Natural Science or similar.
• Demonstrable ability to read building plans.
• Demonstrable ability to read, comprehend and synthesise the issues around complex land use applications.

Post 10 – Environmental Communications Assistant

- Assist with various projects that are being run within the ERMD e.g. the Fire Mapping project, ground truthing of various spatial layers like mining activities.
- Create and print maps.
- Convert GPS co-ordinates or “.dxf” files to shapefiles.
- Basic on screen digitising.
- Basic editing of shapefiles, feature classes and geodatabases.
- Populate attribute tables.
- Create and update metadata.

A degree in Biological Science or Environmental Science with a major in GIS, including experience with ESRI ArcGIS products.

The intern will be required to do the following:
- Support and assist the Head: Environmental Capacity Building, Training and Education Unit and team with appropriate internal and external environmental training and capacity building programmes, projects and interventions through:
- Assist with the development and coordination of delivery of sector-specific environmental capacity building and awareness programmes for City staff.
- Assist with the coordination of the Department’s Work Place Skills Plan.
- Assist with the coordination of the Environmental Internship and volunteer programmes of the department.
- Assist with the facilitation of environmental capacity building and training workshops and meetings with the different line functions within the City and with outside partner organisations and clients.
- Assist with setting up and facilitating of environmental capacity building and training working groups to share common knowledge, solve problems and share lessons learned.
- Assist with making presentations and delivering of professional papers at local, national and international meetings, workshops and conferences.
- Assist with the writing of reports on environmental capacity building and training projects and programmes to report on progress, evaluations and to give recommendations to internal and external colleagues.
Qualification and skills required
At least a B-degree in appropriate natural or social sciences or a combination thereof.
Excellent English, written, oral, communication and organisational skills and computer literacy.
Essential: Knowledge about environmental training and capacity building and a driving licence.
Post 14 – Quality Public Spaces Programme and Project Assistant
