City of Cape Town Environmental Agenda 2009-2014 [PDF 175KB]
In 2008, the Environmental Resource Management Department undertook a 5-year review of the City’s Integrated Metropolitan Environmental Policy (IMEP). The result of this review is the revised IMEP Environmental Agenda, which assigns key measureable environmental targets and goals across City of Cape Town line functions for the next five years.
Integrated Metropolitan Environmental Policy (IMEP) [PDF 1.6MB]
A policy which forms the foundation of an environmental management strategy for the City of Cape Town. The policy was officially adopted by the City of Cape Town on 31 October 2001.
Energy and Climate Change Strategy - October 2007 [PDF 2.1MB]
A strategy to integrate sustainable energy approaches into the core functions of the City of Cape Town, with a framework that provides a clear vision and direction for the City as a whole.
Key strategy targets:
- 10% of all households to have solar water heaters (SWHs) by 2010.
- 30% of all households to use Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) by 2010 and 90% of households by 2020.
- All new subsidised houses to have ceilings from 2005.
- Renewable energy to comprise 10% of total City of Cape Town energy consumed by 2020.

In order to respond to the National Electricity Crisis and to avoid regular load shedding, the City of Cape Town is developing a savings plan to save at least 10% of current electricity demand.

A practical sustainability guide for people and households in Cape Town to make their homes safer and to save money, while working to reduce their impact on our precious environment. The book also provides information on key environmental resource issues facing us globally, and within our city. Individual sections of the book can also be downloaded, e.g. Energy section.
Framework for Adaptation to Climate Change in the City of Cape Town (FAC4T) [PDF 1.8MB] An Adaptation Framework in response to the potential short- to medium-term impacts of climate change in the metropolitan area. Comprising an overarching framework for a city-wide consolidated and coordinated approach to reducing vulnerability to climate impacts. By following this framework, a City Adaptation Plan of Action (CAPA) for the City of Cape Town will be developed and the necessary resources mobilised for its implementation.
Energy Efficiency Strategy of the Republic of South Africa - Department of Minerals and Energy, March 2005 [PDF 365KB]
As the first energy efficiency strategy for South Africa, the document provides clear and practical guidelines for the implementation of efficient practices within the country. The vision of the strategy is to contribute towards affordable energy for all, and to minimise the negative effects of energy usage upon human health and the environment. This will be achieved by encouraging sustainable energy development and energy use through efficient practices. The strategy sets a national target for energy efficiency improvement of 12% by 2015.
