These resources and publications relate to energy efficiency in commercial buildings. The City of Cape Town and the Energy Forum do not necessarily endorse any of these sites or organisations, but simply offer them as useful resources.

National Climate Change Response Green Paper. SA Department of Environmental Affairs. (2010)
The policy outlined in this Green Paper serves as the embodiment of the South African Government's commitment to a fair contribution to the stabilisation of global greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere and the protection of the country and its people from the impacts of unavoidable climate change. It presents the Government's vision for an effective climate change response and the long-term transition to a climate resilient and low-carbon economy and society - a vision premised on Government's commitment to sustainable development and a better life for all.

National Business Initiative’s Energy Efficiency Case Studies. (2011)
This case study booklet documents how companies that are part of the NBI’s voluntary Energy Efficiency Accord have taken forward their energy efficiency initiatives, what has worked, what has not and what they have actually achieved.

Greenhouse Gas Emission Baselines and Reduction Potentials from Buildings in South Africa. A Discussion Document. UNEP SBCI and CIDB. (Rodney Milford at CIDB, 2009)
This report aims to provide:

  • a summary quantification of the influence of buildings on climate change in South Africa;
  • base-line average emissions and relevant performance from selected building types;
  • priorities for policy-makers;
  • opportunities for business;
  • priorities for building design and construction;
  • knowledge gaps, needs for research and development; and
  • post 2012, how global emissions protocols could help.

World Business Council for Sustainable Development’s Energy Efficiency in Buildings Manifesto. (2010)
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a CEO-led, global association of some 200 companies dealing exclusively with business and sustainable development. The Council provides a platform for companies to explore sustainable development, share knowledge, experiences and best practices, and to advocate business positions on these issues in a variety of forums, working with governments, non-governmental and intergovernmental organisations.

UK Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) publication on Energy Benchmarks. (2008)
This publication offers a comprehensive outline of building energy benchmarks; what they are, how they were developed and how to use them. As well as the benchmarks themselves, it provides details of separable energy uses and includes weather and occupancy adjustments.

Climate Action in Megacities: C40 Cities Baseline & Opportunities. Clinton Climate Initiative’s programme with 40 global cities. (2011)
This report is a comprehensive analysis of what the mayors of the C40 megacities are doing to tackle climate change.

California Sustainability Alliance Green Leases Toolkit. (2007, updated 2009)
A toolkit focusing on “green leasing”, which integrates sustainability practices into the entire commercial leasing process. This includes service provider selection; marketing of buildings, development of green specifications; request for proposal (RFP) and letter of intent (LOI) drafting; site selection and due diligence; and the negotiation and drafting of realistic and enforceable lease language.

London’s Better Buildings Partnership Green Lease Toolkit. (2009)
A 'green lease' toolkit focusing on best practices, a model green MOU and model green lease clauses. Additional resources include a Sustainability Benchmarking Toolkit, Green Building Management Toolkit and a Sustainable Retrofit Guide.
