Driving and learners' licencing

The information on this site will guide you through the application procedure (including what documents to bring and how long you’ll need to wait) for new driving and learners’ driving licences. You can also find information about renewing your licence here.

The City has 18 driving licence testing centres (DLTCs) located at central points throughout Cape Town. Every month these process an average of 5 000 learners’ driving and 5 300 driving licence tests. They also issue and renew professional driving permits (PRDPs) and driving card licences for over one million road users. To cater for increasing demand, the City has introduced various measures to streamline its licensing processes, including supplying the public with information about DLTCs with the shortest waiting periods for testing. The charts below provide a visual guide to these.

It is important to note that these charts are subject to change, and must therefore be used as a guideline only. As bookings are made, the information changes, and this impacts on what is available. As an example, a booking that is available in the morning may not be available in the afternoon.
