Pap Smear Screening
The taking of a pap smear is a screening test provided to women to detect the early stages of what is called cervical cancer or in laymen’s terms cancer of the “mouth of the womb”. If early signs of cancer are detected, further investigations are done and treatment given where appropriate. The earlier cancer is treated, the more likely the chances are of recovery.

Sometimes, results are unclear and a repeat smear is necessary. The government currently funds one free pap smear every 10 years from the age of 30 to 59 i.e. a women should be able to have 3 free pap smears in her lifetime.

To find those clinics which provide this service, or alternatively contact your nearest clinic and enquire about available services. Most local authority clinics provide this service.
