2010 stadium ‘won’t affect basic services’
Hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup and constructing the new Green Point stadium will not affect basic services and will benefit Cape Town in the long term, according to Executive Mayor Helen Zille. “It is simply wrong to claim, as some commentators have, that basic services will be curtailed in order to finance the stadium,” she said. Council approves stadium operator contract
The Green Point stadium is one step closer to becoming a viable asset for Cape Town after Council unanimously approved the appointment of the long-term operator for the facility on Wednesday, 3 December 2008. The City of Cape Town's Bid Adjudication Committee had recently recommended awarding the contract to Business Venture Investments 1317 (Pty) Ltd, a consortium of Stade de France and local sports marketing company SAIL Group. Stadium creates thousands of jobs
The new Green Point Stadium is not only altering the city’s skyline and providing Cape Town with a valuable new asset - it is also creating thousands of new jobs, with a positive spin-off for the city’s economy. According to a special report prepared for Council, 2,143 on-site jobs have been created to construct the stadium, and 1,179 artisans have received training from the contractors. (more>>)
