CEPA challenge delayed

Council approves Green Point urban park plan

After a comprehensive public participation process, Council has approved a proposal for the redevelopment of Green Point Common as an urban park and precinct for the 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium, and has submitted the plan to the provincial MEC for Environment, Planning and Economic Development, for her approval. Most Capetonians support 2010 stadium, 29 June 2007

An independent market research company has found that over two-thirds of Capetonians are in favour of the Green Point stadium, and 82 percent of poor and unemployed people support it. Significant numbers also regard the hosting of World Cup 2010 as being of vital importance to South Africa, while the majority of Capetonians think that the country will be ready to host it, according to the findings of a study by TNS Research Surveys that has just been released. City unveils 2010 host city logo, 19 June 2007
Cape Town is the first South African city to unveil its 2010 FIFA World Cup host city logo, which depicts the city’s defining icon, Table Mountain, under the African sun with the waters of Table Bay beneath. It will be used in conjunction with the 2010 FIFA World Cup’s official emblem, to form a composite logo.

Cape Town to host Blatter, 18 June 2007

FIFA President Sepp Blatter is to visit Cape Town as part of his first trip to South Africa since construction work started ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Blatter will make a whirlwind visit to Cape Town on Tuesday, and during the course of the day will meet with President Thabo Mbeki, Western Cape Premier Ebrahim Rasool and Mayor Helen Zille. Province accepts EIR recommendations for new stadium, 7 November 2006
The Provincial Government of the Western Cape has given the go-ahead for Cape Town's 2010 soccer stadium to be built on the site of the golf course at Green Point. This is in line with the recommendations of the final Environmental Impact Report for the proposed stadium. (more >>)

World Cup focus turns to SA, 12 July 2006
As the world recovers from a month of football madness, the focus now turns from Germany to South Africa, and to the preparations for the next World Cup in 2010. FIFA president Sepp Blatter symbolically handed over the reins to President Thabo Mbeki at a glittering ceremony in Berlin, which was also attended by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan, various government ministers and the members of the 2010 Local Organising Committee, led by Danny Jordaan.
