Visitors to Cape Town during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ will have access to a transport system that links them to accommodation areas, World Cup facilities and the city’s main attractions.
The transport system will comprise a coordinated public transport network, metered taxis, tourism and charter services, vehicle rentals and a service for passengers with special needs.
Public transport services
The public transport network will feature:
- A comprehensive rail system to supplement the existing network of scheduled bus and informal jitney*-type minibus** taxi services that currently provide the regular public transport in Cape Town
- An Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) service, which will offer residents and visitors a customer focussed scheduled bus service between the city centre, the airport, Hout Bay and Table View. The City recently approved the budget required to implement the first phase of this system
The public transport system will operate for extended hours, and will be supplemented by additional event transport services. In addition, the ticketing system will allow multiple trips across a range of transport services.
Information on rail and bus schedules and fares will be available in print, on the internet and from the existing call centre (tel 0800 656 463). As the minibus taxi industry operates independently of schedules or published rates, some local knowledge is typically required to flag down the correct vehicle for the desired destination.
Metered taxis***A fleet of metered taxis will operate to supplement the public transport network throughout the metropolitan area. Services will operate from the airport, the city centre and central nodes in accommodation areas.
Special needs passengers’ transport
A Dial-a-Ride service operates on request for people with special needs. The capacity of this service will be expanded to cater for increased demand during the event.
Other transport optionsA wide range of tourism and charter transport services, including vehicle rentals, will be available to cater for personalised travel needs. These services can be accessed via the tourism information desks that are located throughout the city.
Travel restrictions in Cape Town
- The main attractions, including the Green Point Stadium, FIFA Fan Park and Fan Mile are situated in the city centre. To establish and maintain a pleasant pedestrian environment, private vehicle access in the city centre will be restricted. Access and parking will be restricted for non-accredited transport, especially on days when a match is being played
- All travelers are strongly advised to use the extended public transport system throughout the event
- Please visit this site again for more detail as it becomes available in the run-up to the 2010 event
