City approves more than R20 million grants in sponsorship<div>The City of Cape Town has approved the disbursement of R20 677 290 to nearly 5 000 beneficiaries who range from early childhood development centres and organisations who work with the homeless, to gender-based violence shelters as well as artists involved in our Arts and Culture programmes.</div><div><br></div><div>The City’s Social Development Department will disburse humanitarian aid to non-government organisations through grants in sponsorship.<br></div><div><br></div><div>This option is the most viable as it allows for direct support to beneficiaries who are already known and who make use of services provided currently thus ensuring that assistance is provided to those who need it most.</div><div><br></div><div>The disbursement of this financial support is a recognition of the important role that partners play in working with vulnerable communities across the city. We cannot do it alone. The city will work with organisations that share our vision, passion and commitment to making sure that all members of our society are not only safe but treated and seen as equal members. It is our responsibility, as a collective, to help those who want to be helped.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>NPOs in the following areas will receive funding:</div><div><br></div><div style="text-align:left;"><ul><li><strong>NPOs operating shelters for victims of gender-based violence:</strong></li></ul></div><div>Pride Shelter, IHATA Shelter for Abused Women and Children, Saartjie Baartman/Womens Movement Shelter, Sisters Incorporated, St. Annes Home, Care Haven, The Safe House, Philisa Abafazi</div><div style="text-align:left;"><br><ul><li><strong>NPOs operating shelters for street people to deal with the increased demand:</strong></li></ul></div><div>Haven Night Shelter Organisation, OASIS Reach for your Dream, UBUNTU Circle of Courage, Tygerberg Association for Street People, Cape Flats YMCA, The Hope Exchange, Service Dining Room</div><div><br></div><div style="text-align:left;"><ul><li><strong>Humanitarian Relief support to Al-Imdaad Foundation:</strong></li></ul></div><div>Food parcels for the children and their families at the 35 City-owned ECD centres, where 3 629 families will benefit over a period of three months and food parcels for artists (buskers and crafters)</div><div><br></div><div style="text-align:left;"><ul><li><strong>Animal Welfare: Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA)</strong></li></ul></div><div>Lockdown regulations necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic has put economic stress on households and an increased financial burden on organisations which support and provide services to those most vulnerable in our communities.</div><div><br></div><div>Support to these organisations is based on current services being provided and includes allowances for meals and cleaning materials.</div><div><br></div><div>Our contribution aims to ensure the continuation of existing services based on the increased demand as these organisations will be required to continue providing psycho-social, counselling services and development support within the COVID-19 social distancing requirements.</div><div><br></div><div>The impact will be felt for a long time and it will take the City, organisations and our communities many months to recover. In the meantime, relief is required now while we work towards rebuilding after lockdown.</div><div><br></div><div>Despite the efforts of critics to portray the city as uncaring and cruel towards vulnerable members of our society, we will continue to accept the challenge put to us by President Cyril Ramaphosa that through a collaborative spirit, we will turn this crisis into an opportunity to invest in a new society by promoting a new consciousness. I commend all the role players who assist with providing invaluable aid to our communities across the city.</div><div><br></div><div>We are all in this together and it is only by working as one that we will get through this pandemic.</div><div><br></div><div><strong>End</strong><br></div><p><br></p>2020-05-27T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891d;GP0|#904f8ac3-ad18-4896-a9a8-86feb1d4a1b7;L0|#0904f8ac3-ad18-4896-a9a8-86feb1d4a1b7|StatementsGP0|#67a38274-6eb4-4def-a739-b18585ff953d;L0|#067a38274-6eb4-4def-a739-b18585ff953d|early chidhood development centre;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#1cb86dd3-b43c-4384-919d-154c186936b4;L0|#01cb86dd3-b43c-4384-919d-154c186936b4|SPCA;GP0|#ea788e35-e3da-4fc7-b104-61de5f31fa71;L0|#0ea788e35-e3da-4fc7-b104-61de5f31fa71|NPO1
