City’s traffic fines roadshow a resounding successThe City of Cape Town’s Legal Services Department partnered with the Traffic Service and the Revenue Department to bring City services closer to motorists last week.<span>​<figure class="figure-credits left"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/traffic%20roadd%20show.jpg" style="width:511px;" /><figcaption> <p> © City of Cape Town</p> </figcaption> </figure><p>The City of Cape Town’s Legal Services Department partnered with the Traffic Service and the Revenue Department to bring City services closer to motorists last week.</p><p>A three-day traffic fines roadshow saw fines to the value of over R500 000 being paid. Motorists had the opportunity to plead for leniency by making representations to the prosecutors for a reduced fine, make general enquiries about traffic fines and warrants, and make payment – all in one venue.</p><p>‘The response to the traffic fine roadshow was phenomenal. I am pleased that motorists took time out to make their way to the Civic Centre and access the service and information that was available. The roadshow was in line with a key priority of the City’s Organisational Development and Transformation Plan to build a more customer-focused organisation by taking services to our residents,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Councillor Raelene Arendse.</p></span><span><figure class="figure-credits right"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/traffic%20roadd%20show3.jpg" style="width:511px;" /><figcaption> <p> © City of Cape Town</p> </figcaption> </figure><p>Similar services have been available on occasion at roadblocks, but this was the first time that the service was made available at a City facility for an extended period of time. </p><p>The unprecedented response to this initiative indicates that there is a need for more such roadshows in the future. New traffic officers just the ticketThe City of Cape Town’s newest traffic recruits will hit the streets just in time for the peak festive season<p>​The City of Cape Town’s newest traffic recruits will hit the streets just in time for the peak festive season. The group of 20 officers received their certificates at a graduation ceremony today after completing their studies and practical assessments.</p><span><p>In 2015 the Traffic Services Department embarked on a learnership programme to ensure the ongoing recruitment and training of officers to counter the natural attrition within its ranks. .</p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/GALLERY_traffic.jpg" alt="" style="width:948px;" /> </figure>​​</span><span>​​​​​The graduates are the latest group of recruits to have completed the programme, just six months after 30 others graduated after walking the same road. Increasing our staff complement aligns with the City's commitment to promoting safer communities under the Organisational Development and Transformation Plan. <p>As part of the selection process to whittle down the thousands of applications received, candidates had to complete written and physical assessments. This was followed by a round of interviews, medical examinations, criminal checks and reference checks.</p><p>The group of 20 that was left standing after the rigours of the assessment then completed a 12-month Further Education and Training course in Road Traffic Law Enforcement offered in partnership with the Metro Police Training Academy. The course also included training in handling firearms, conducting roadblocks and point duty, and restraining techniques.. </p><p>‘The learnership programme has made it possible for us to replenish staff numbers where officers have retired or resigned, but it is also an opportunity to increase the number of traffic officers in Cape Town. Road safety continues to be one of our biggest headaches and so these new recruits will have their work cut out for them.</p><p>‘I encourage the new officers to wear their uniforms with pride and to be mindful of the responsibility that comes with the job. Enforcing the law fairly is crucial, but so too is changing the behaviour of road users through constant awareness and education.</p> <figure class="subtopic-fullsize-img"> <img class="responsive" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/GALLERY_traffic2.jpg" alt="" style="width:836px;" /> </figure></span><p>‘I also caution the public not to underestimate the rookies. At our recent annual awards, one of the 2016 graduates was a nominee for officer of the year after generating nearly 6 000 cases, confiscating 168 cellphones and making 49 arrests in his first year on the job. That is the calibre of officer who is donning the uniform and is indicative of the passion and enthusiasm that these graduates bring. City warns prospective housing beneficiaries against imposters Fraudsters posing as community representatives are active across Cape Town<p>​</p><p>Fraudsters posing as community representatives are active across Cape Town, but tend to target areas where the City of Cape Town is set to commence with new housing developments. Residents are advised to exercise caution and not to hand over any cash if solicited.</p><p>‘We’ve heard about fraudsters who are targeting residents living in Retreat. They pose as community representatives and arrange so-called community meetings for those registered on the City’s housing database, or for those still wanting to register. They often ask a cover charge from those attending the meetings, and promise to give those who pay preferential treatment in the allocation or building of new houses. I want to assure residents that we will never ask money in exchange for a housing opportunity. The moment somebody makes such an offer you should know that the person is a fraud,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport and Urban Development, Councillor Brett Herron.</p><p>The City allocates housing opportunities to those who are registered on the housing database, and in accordance with our <a href="http://bit.ly/2yA8KCl">allocation policy</a> . </p><p>‘Nobody can jump the queue on the waiting list for a house. Residents should be aware of opportunists offering special advice and operating in areas under the guise of providing housing to those registered on our housing database. We always advertise community meetings about future housing developments in an official manner with the City logo on the advert. City officials manage these meetings, not community members. We will never charge money for entry to these meetings, or for names to be added to a housing list. I once again want to urge residents from Retreat to be extra cautious as we have been told that fraudsters are operating in this area of late,’ said Councillor Herron.</p><p>To qualify for housing opportunities, residents must be registered on the City’s housing database. Lifeguards on duty to make sure everything goes swimminglyThe City of Cape Town has increased the number of lifeguards on its beaches this festive season to keep beach-goers safe.<span>​<figure class="figure-credits left"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/Inline_Lifesavers.jpg" style="width:581px;" /><figcaption> <p> © City of Cape Town</p> </figcaption> </figure><p>The City of Cape Town has increased the number of lifeguards on its beaches this festive season to keep beach-goers safe.</p><p>Each year, more than 2 million people flock to the City’s beaches during the peak summer season. With the festive season now in full swing, the City would like to caution the public to stay safe this summer at the City’s amenities.</p><p>As at Wednesday 13 December 2017, two drownings have been recorded at Mnandi Beach on the False Bay coast – both victims were young girls.</p><span><figure class="figure-credits right"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/inline_lifesavers2.jpg" style="width:511px;" /><figcaption> <p> © City of Cape Town</p> </figcaption> </figure><p>Ordinarily, the City has more than 270 trained and accredited temporary lifeguards and over 1 500 volunteer lifeguards on duty, as well as the voluntary services of the various lifesaving clubs affiliated to Lifesaving Western Province. This year, the Recreation and Parks Department has a pool of 100 additional lifeguards for deployment as needed.</p><p>‘We made this arrangement to compensate for the closure of many municipal swimming pools that will more than likely see an increase in visitor numbers to our beaches and tidal pools. We also thank Lifesaving Western Province for their continued support in helping us build a safer city which is a critical priority in our Organisational Development and Transformation Plan.</p><p>‘However, much of our success will depend on the cooperation of the public. We still have far too many people who swim outside of the designated bathing areas and who disregard the instructions of lifeguards. Alcohol is the other major factor that bedevils our efforts to ensure public safety,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security; and Social Services, Alderman JP Smith.</p>​​</span></span><span>​<figure class="figure-credits left"><img class="responsive" alt="placeholder" src="http://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/Media%20Centre/inline_lifesavers3.jpg" style="width:752px;" /><figcaption> <p> © City of Cape Town</p> </figcaption> </figure><p>Lifeguards will be deployed between 10:00 and 18:00 daily to 22 beaches until 31 January 2018. Thereafter, they will be deployed to beaches only on weekends and public holidays until 31 March 2018. The following beaches will have lifeguards on duty: Big Bay, Bikini, Blue Waters, Camps Bay, Clifton, Danger, Fish Hoek, Gordon's Bay, Hout Bay, Kalk Bay, Kogel Bay, Llandudno Beach, Macassar Beach, Melkbosstrand, Milnerton, Mnandi, Monwabisi, Muizenberg, Silwerstroom, Strand, Strandfontein Beach, and Sunrise.</p><p>A full list of <a href="http://www.capetown.gov.za/Explore%20and%20enjoy/visitor-safety/general-safety-awareness/water-safety-at-pools-and-beaches">water safety tips </a>is available.</p><p>Beach-goers are reminded that alcohol is not permitted at any of Cape Town’s beaches or swimming pools. More than two-thirds of injuries and drownings involve people who are under the influence of alcohol. Any alcohol found on beaches will be confiscated by law enforcement. Since 1 December, some 3 700 litres of alcohol has been confiscated from beaches and other public spaces.</p><p>‘We expect the amount of confiscated alcohol to increase significantly in the weeks ahead. It’s more than a little frustrating, because it does feel as though we say the same things over and over and yet history repeats itself every year. I implore the public to please use common sense when they are out and about on the roads and at recreational facilities. Alcohol impairs one’s judgment and leads to reckless and irresponsible behaviour that endangers the affected person as well as others who are wanting to enjoy our beaches.
