The City Parks HIV and Aids Mainstreaming Project creates awareness about HIV and Aids. It includes initiatives such as:
- Signage in parks and cemeteries
- Community education workshops held in parks
- Workshops organised in schools
- Distributing pamphlets and condoms on World AIDS day
- Tying red ribbons around trees on World AIDS day to raise awareness
- Donations to a home for children orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV and Aids
- Collecting funds and wearing red ribbons
- Special community interventions conducted by City Parks staff voluntarily in their free time, e.g. driving trucks with educational signage and distributing free condoms
The City Parks HIV and Aids programme was the runner-up in the 2005 Public Sector Awards for sustainability, and received a commendation for outstanding achievement in Environmental Conservation in the category of Social Environment, in the 2005 Cape Times Caltex Awards. |
