After a serious investigation into the merits of the system, the City of Cape Town has given the go-ahead to implement the first part of an Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system. The initial phase will enable the City to meet the public transport requirements for the 2010 Host City Transport Operations Plan, the requirements of the Host City Agreement signed with FIFA, the Record of Decision for the new Green Point Stadium, and the Stadium Use Agreement, while at the same time enabling it to leave a legacy of improved public transport for future generations.
This proposed phase, also known as Phase 1A, will be followed by the full Phase 1 plan, which will bring the convenience and comfort of this quality service within reach of even more people. What is important in a first or demonstration phase is to ensure that the system wins public support and operates successfully, so that it can be expanded.
