Enjoy Cape Town responsibly

Concerns about global warming, the destruction of the environment, erosion of cultures and lifestyles, and poverty have created a need for Responsible Tourism - a way of making global travel economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.

While Responsible Tourism does include environmental awareness, it is also about the all-encompassing legacy of tourism. It aims to make a positive contribution to the conservation of cultural heritage, to provide more meaningful connections with local people, a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues, and to generate greater economic benefits for local people.

Responsible Tourism “creates better places to live in, and better places to visit.” In other words, our place is your place, and we invite you to treat our city kindly.

In addition to its Responsible Tourism Charter, the City of Cape Town has a “Green Goal” strategy for 2010 and beyond.

Environmental protection and compliance with environmental legislation are obligations contained in the Host City Agreement signed by the City of Cape Town (CCT), the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

Key objectives:

  • Reducing and recycling waste as much as possible
  • Reducing dependence on potable water
  • Promoting environmental awareness
  • Promoting sustainable lifestyles
  • Reducing the “carbon footprint” of the event
  • Using energy-efficient systems and practices in the new Cape Town Stadium and on the surrounding 85-hectare Green Point Common

Please have a look at the Responsible Tourism page of the City's Tourism Department site for more details.
